What's up homies!?
At last week's meeting Mark Kelly (vice president of Student Affairs) attended our meeting to discuss with us some proposals for improving Latino student affairs here at Columbia. This week at Latino Alliance, we are going to be giving the chance to those who wish to address specific issues by conducting a SWOT analysis (strength, weaknesses, opporitunites, threats) at this upcoming meeting.

Please take this opporitunity to let your voice be heard! Spread the word about the Speak out, and bring a homie if you can. All are welcome to the meeting, it would be nice to have those with a non-latino background to attend so that they could get a perspective into the latino student here at columbia. This year the election process was hilarious.
We had a couple of last minute nominees and that rocks!

Everyone did their mini speeches and the Presidential Candidates were asked one or two questions about where they want to take Latino Alliance. Interestingly enough Carlos Acevedo--one of the candidates--was stuck in traffic, so his friend Celi Munoz called him during the elections...Carlos was able to give his speech via Celi's cell phone speaker, and one of our members even popped one question to him.

Junior. I will have been a part of Latino Alliance for 2 years now, and

Adrenaline, Student Orgnization Council, and N.A.N.I. While in high
school I was an active member of the spanish club and Art club and held
the Presidental position in both. I was also a kairos retreat leader and
a member of my High school's Youth & Government. I have continued to
try and be a leader here in my few years at Columbia by being an active
student throughout the campus, and will continue to do so for Latino

LATINO ALLIANCE E-BOARD NOMINATIONS will take place this Wednesday May 25th during our last Latino Alliance Meeting of this semester.

It's very important for us to have the first 6 positions filled in order for Latino Alliance to receive funding and be a Columbia College recognized student org.

Hey people! I just wanted to thank everyone who attended our first meeting last week...I hope you all had as much fun as I did. Anyway, for those of you who were unable to join us, feel free to stop by every Wednesday at 5pm in room 405. Now, if you were unable to join us, here is a brief run down of what we discussed:

We reviewed last semester's activities including: Day of the Dead exhibit at Agguire Duron Gallery, our very successful Fundraising Bake Sale and our Dia de Reyes Carnaval at El Hogar del Nino.
We also spoke about upcoming events such as the Latino Council on the Media on March 10th, the USHLI Conference on March 11th, 12th and 13th, and the Latino Film Festival on April 8th-12th. For more information about these events you can stop by the Multicultural Affairs office in the Wabash building on the 3rd floor room 304 and pick up sign-up sheets and informational flyers and packets.
Also on March 9th, 2005, SGA will be sponsoring a bowling tournament at UIC at 6pm. Come and join in the cheers or dropping some pins.
Unfortunately, Nick Gomez announced his resignation as President of Latino Alliance, therefore Karla Leal, our Vice-President has stepped up to take his place. On Wednesday we announced open nominations for Vice-President elections which will be held this Wednesday March 2nd. The nominees are: Samuel Reyes, Joevanny Duran, Melissa Perez and Juan Carlos Martinez. Come and vote for your next Latino Alliance V.P.

Hello Sexy Latinos!

On February 16, 2005, DALE, DePaul Alliance for Latino Empowerment (D.A.L.E.), will be hosting its annual Noche de Ganatelos event at DePaul University and we are all invited!

Noche de Ganatelos is one of DALE's annual signature events in which those interested to participate donate auction items such as gift certificates or offer some sort of service (homemade dinner, a night out on the town, a car wash, etc.). This year, along with the auction, the event will be having dance and song performances throughout the evening!

With your presence and participation, you will be able to contribute in the fundraising for our scholarships that we give out to deserving high school seniors. We ask for a suggestion donation of $3.00 at the door but, of course, whatever you can give is gratefully received. Free Food :)

INTERESTING LATINO INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

Hello Sexy Latinos,

Here's a very good internship opportunity.

My name is Scott Smith and I am the Assistant Trainer at the National Runaway Switchboard (NRS). The National Runaway Switchboard provides crisis intervention, information and referral to youth and families through national and local hotlines as well as advocacy and educational services on the issues of adolescence. We are currently seeking bilingual (Spanish and English) candidates to fill an internship position as Crisis Line Workers on our hotline.

Interns at NRS will be required to complete our 36-hour training program. They will then answer crisis calls on a variety of issues and receive direct experience and supervision while helping empower youth and families. In addition, interns will facilitate future training sessions and work on other projects based on their unique skills and interests as well as agency needs. The position requires a minimum of 8 hours per week and there is some flexibility in scheduling though preference is given to students who have daytime availability. Candidates should speak Spanish; have a background in psychology, sociology, or social work; and receive credit from her/his academic institution for this internship as the position is unpaid.

We have worked with students from several Chicago universities in the past with great success. Any interested students can contact me via the information below.

HERE ARE SOME GIFT IDEAS

Any type of candy, knick-knacks, school supplies, small action figures, small toys, gloves, scarves, lip glosses, nail polish, puzzles, etc; basically, all sorts of stocking stuffers that can be distributed to boys, girls or both.

*We are currently planning the "Dia de Reyes Carnival" (Holiday Party) for the children of "El hogar del niño" in Pilsen. The party will take place FRIDAY JAN 7TH @ "El Hogar del Nino" As you can see in our side photo, last week we meet with El hogar del Nino's staff. They showed us the installations,they talked about the programs they have for their children, and we planned this party.

EVERYONE IS INVITED TO VOLUNTEER...We want these kids to see Columbia Students as Role models, while we entertain them.

We need 3 Wise Men (Sexy Latino Alliance Students Volunteers) to dress up as "LOS TRES REYES MAGOS" (The 3 Wise Kings)

We also need someone that can make and/or provide these costumes for us. If you know of someone who can lend them to us, please let us know, or if have an imaginative mind that can create something simple for us, please contact us too.

I am looking for male Spanish speakers (from Mexico) and male
Portuguese speakers (from Brazil) to participate in a voice-over project.

The voice-over will be in "U.N. Translation" form, which is what you
see on the news when the interpreter's voice is played over the actual
dialogue, but you can still hear the actual in the background. This type
of voice-over is takes longer than a straight narration voice-over
since timing is very important. However, the recording should not take
longer than 2-3 hours. The date and time of the recording are yet to be
determined but will take place during the last week of December or the
first week of January. This is a paid project, although I do not yet
have the exact hourly rate yet. We do, however, guarantee a two hour
minimum, in the case that the recording takes only one hour, two hours
will still be paid.

Could you please refer me to anyone who may be interested? Also, feel
free to forward this to anyone who may be interested and available and

Here is detailed information about SACF and some donation ideas.

Saving A Childhood Foundation (S.A.C.F.) is a non-profit based in
Chicago's Humboldt Park area.

They provide after-school programs for at-risk youth ages 7-14. Unfortunately, many of the youth they work with will go without receiving gifts for Christmas. Therefore, SACF wants to provide each child with a stocking full of candy and small gifts.

We ask for your assistance in helping our youth’s Christmas be a bit
more joyful. We are still gathering any type of candy, knick-knacks, school supplies, small action figures, small toys, gloves, scarves, lip
glosses, nail polish, puzzles, etc; basically, all sorts of stocking stuffers
that can be distributed to boys, girls or both.

Any items you can donate will be greatly appreciated.

Ofrendas Exhibition Opening Reception

Latino Alliance E-board thanks everyone that helped us get our Day of the Dead altar ready for the Ofrendas Exhibition at the Aguirre-Duron Gallery in Pilsen. The opening reception was this Friday Nov. 12th, and it was a complete success. The gallery was packed; we had the opportunity to remember our loved ones with respect and keep our culture alive with our altar. All the altars at the gallery were very unique, artists that participated in this exhibition include Mario Castillo and several Columbia College Alumni.

This is the latest information of the set up of the Day of the Dead Altar

We really need your help for the Ofrendas Exhibition.

There will be an arts and crafts workshop this FRIDAY OCT 29TH FROM 12 TO 2PM (We might go a bit longer) at the Office of Multicultural Affairs (Ana Maria's Office)
Room 304 of the 623 S. Wabash Building.

The ALTAR SET UP will be this SUNDAY OCT. 31ST FROM 2PM TO 6PM

Fall is back and school is now, or rather soon to be, in session. And to start thigns off we have the upcoming New Student Convocation happenin right at Columbia College on Harrison and Wabash from 12-3. IPOD RAFFLE INFO

Hey Everyone,
Our meeting on Wednesday April 14 will deal with the itinerary for the conference and we will also announce the winners of the raffle. If you are attending the conference please try to make this meeting, if not please let us know so that we can get the information to you.

RAFFLE TICKETS ARE DUE WEDNESDAY APRIL 14 AT NOON!!

Please hand in your tickets and money on time. We need everyone's registration money so that we can get our group registered. Hand in your money and tickets in an envelope with your name on it and how much money there is. If you have any extra tickets you know will not be sold please get those to us so we can try to sell those as quickly as possible. Turn things in to Ana Maria in room 304 of the Wabash building or give Nick a call at 630-544-4320 if that is not possible.

Hello,

I'm organizing the Latino Alliance, Latino student film festival @ Batey Urbano April 10th, the film that will be screened will be the films selected for the student segment of the Chicago Latino film festival along with some others. Since this event is on a Saturday it will be extremely important to get the word out especially when we return, it is the first Saturday after our break.

We have an opportunity to raise some funds for Culture night.
